Personal Details I am the Associate Professor of Rural Mental Health at Monash University Department of Rural and Indigenous Health and Gippsland Medical School. I was born and raised on a wheat and sheep farm in the West Wimmera (Mitre, near Horsham) of Victoria and with my partner (Andrea Reupert) i have two children (Charlotte and Kellie). I was a clinician for 15 years in the areas of drug and alcohol counselling, prison psychology and employee assistance services. My teaching has been in the areas of research methodology and statistics and I have specific expertise in program evaluation. I have over 40 publications, 30 conference presentations, supervised over 30 honours, Masters and Phd students to completion and successfully acquitted 15 research grants totalling over $500,000. I research in the areas of stress, mental health and wellbeing, positive psychology and rurality. My (along with Andrea Reupert) current major research focus is in the area of families with parental mental illness. I am the outgoing Editor of the Journal Rural Society. Research My research is generally in the area of health psychology focusing on mental health and wellbeing. One area of interest is in relation to the measurement of positive (uplift) and negative (hassle) daily events within Richard Lazarus's cognitive appraisal model of stress and emotion. A second area is in relation to primary mental health . This includes working with community organisations (e.g. Primary Mental Health Practitioners, Divisions of General Practice) to establish primary intervention program need, assessment and/or evaluations. In addition, I am part of a number of collaborations undertaking interventions and research in relation to children whose parents have a mental illness . Finally, I undertake social research in relation to conservation behaviours (e.g. farmer land use behaviour). Teaching My teaching mostly focuses on Research Methodology and Statistics although I also have teaching interests are in the areas of health, abnormal and counselling psychology. I also offer workshops in the program evaluation area.
